Helpful information for breast cancer patients is now just the touch of a smart phone screen away.

There are smart phone applications for patients seeking resources, for anyone interested in donating money for research and for those just wanting to show their support for the cause.

“We are always trying to find new ways to give people information they need and want,” said Pamela Green, associate director of marketing for BreastCancer.org.

The website’s Breast Cancer Diagnosis Guide, offered to smart phone users for free, was launched in September 2010 and delivers patients a host of information, from breast cancer-related articles to a patient’s pathology report.

“It’s information that’s portable and accessible,” Green said.

Denise Stuber, a registered nurse who has worked with the breast cancer support group In Good Company, said anyone interested in a smart phone app should be sure to consider the source.

“We like the ones that are scientifically based,” Stuber said.

The Food and Drug Administration is working on a new set of guidelines to help make sure consumers receive accurate information through new smart phone apps. The agency is finalizing guidelines and should have them available as early as Thursday, according to an FDA news release.

“The use of mobile medical apps on smart phones and tablets is revolutionizing healthcare delivery,” said Jeffrey Shuren, a doctor who directs the FDA’s Center for Devices and Radiological Health.

“Our draft approach calls for oversight of only those mobile medical apps that present the greatest risk to patients when they don’t work as intended.”

Here’s a quick look at a few breast cancer-specific apps that are available:

Breast Cancer Diagnosis Guide: This free application allows a user to access their pathology report. It includes a glossary of terms.

iEat for Life: BreastCancer: This $2.99 application helps breast cancer patients make good food choices.

Give Five for Pink: This $5.99 application turns a Blackberry user’s phone pink for anyone donating $5 to the Susan G. Koman for the Cure organization.
